Director of Communications and Engagement

A+ Colorado is looking for an innovative communications professional to join our staff. This team member will lead the communications team while overseeing A+ communications strategy including digital, print, and events. The person in this role will be responsible for translating A+ research into digestible problems and solutions for a variety of audiences. They must be nimble in a quickly shifting landscape, able to provide messaging on behalf of the organization in response to policy priorities. They will expand the A+ brand and work collaboratively with our advocacy, policy, and research staff to bring to life new initiatives to build and engage our audiences. The right candidate will have an acute attention to detail, stay informed on the latest communications trends, and be willing to roll up their sleeves to advance our mission.

Responsibilities Include:

Serve as the communications thought leader for the organization

-Develop and implement the A+ Colorado communications strategy with a focus on continuous evaluation of our progress to achieve desired outcomes

-Co-manage press relationships with A+ Colorado’s President to increase media impact

-Stay on top of new media trends, identifying opportunities to promote A+ work both online as well as through traditional media

-Utilize a comprehensive media analytics dashboard to monitor content performance through all external A+ channels (website, newsletter, social) and adjust our behavior to meet communications goals

Oversee content strategy on all social media accounts with a focus on accelerating engagement

-Manage the Communications and Development Associate to produce timely and relevant content, news, and stories across internal and external communications channels

-Leverage events to capture new followers and organizational champions 

Oversee content creation and innovation

-Integrate interactive data visualizations throughout A+ reports and campaigns

-Manage vendor relationships for graphic design, website maintenance, and others

-Identify opportunities to improve user experience on A+ website

-Monitor trends in SEO to optimize website content and maximize engagement

Build high impact communication materials and resources

-Draft press releases and assemble press kits to support research releases and policy initiatives for the organization

-Lead creation of weekly newsletters using Mailchimp, updating the templates as needed

-Develop high impact promotional materials to be shared strategically to advance the goals of the organization

-Support A+ team in regularly updating website content through website CMS (WordPress)

Build relationships with A+ Colorado partners

-Connect with communications staff in the Colorado education community to create partnerships for sharing and amplifying mission driven content

-Stay engaged with education stakeholders and coalitions to strengthen partnerships, share relevant education content, and amplify impact messages

-Sign up for relevant blogs, news sites, local organization newsletters, and websites to stay on top of education topics that are trending

Event Planning

-Provide logistics support as needed

-Develop necessary communications and content for events including invites, registration pages, follow-up communications, materials for the event, and surveys

-Other duties as assigned



-College Diploma or equivalent

-Excellent written and verbal communication skills for both internal and external audiences

-Experience leading digital and traditional communications activities

-Direct management experience

-Data-driven decision maker

-Efficient multi-tasker

-Willing to work independently as well as with a team

-Detail-oriented and highly organized

-Interest or experience in education policy and advocacy, and curious to learn more

-Comfortable with ambiguity and a rapidly shifting landscape

-Flexibility in dealing with organizational growth and change

-Commitment to A+’s mission of improving access to excellent educational opportunities and increasing achievement across Colorado



-3-5 years of communications experience

-1-2 years of management experience

-Experience with data visualization software or development (Tableau)

-Experience managing: WordPress, Hootsuite, Google Analytics, Mailchimp, Adobe Creative Cloud (Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator)

-Spanish language proficiency

The salary range for this position is $55,000-$60,000 with a matching 401(k) plan after one year, employer sponsored health care coverage, paid holidays, and generous leave policy.
